Theoldest house in the place, now roofless, was builtabout seventy-four years ago, and was the home ofKit Carson, whose tombstone in the little Americangraveyard east of the town marks the spot where hewas buried. Opposite the printing-office was the lit-tle church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, with the priestshouse and convent beside it. In the court-room near by a case was being arguedby Mexicans—and although we could not understanda word they said, it could be plainly seen that theaffair was creating great excitement. The troubleoriginated from a quarrel between two Mexicans ata dance the night before, when the defendant hadused his knife too freely on the plaintiff. Such casesare frequent in Taos, and are generally decided infavor of the party having the greatest number offollowers. 154

LIFE IN THE PUEBLO. Next morning- we made our first visit to the pueblo,drivinj^- out in a light Avagon. On the road north of thetown we met several Indians, who liad walked overfrom the pueblo three miles beyond. These Indiansbore a marked differenee to those in the southern pueb-loes, both on aeeount of their dress, which was purelyIndian, without any ^lexiean innovations, and also bytheir features, which resemble more nearly thewilder tribes of the north. This change is, no doubt,the result of intermarrying with the Xavajoes andthe Apaehes, who live but a short distance over themountains toward the west. So long has this beengoing on that the Taos Indians have lost much oftheir Pueblo identity. The morning was perfect, the clear atmosphere causing Taos Peak, with its barren top, to stand out boldly in the sunlight.
