Text Appearing Before Image:
t theladies pavilhon during the meeting and the Jocky Club Ball at itsclose are crowded with the elite of the beauty, the fashion, and thechivalry of the State. The number of gentlemen interested in the success of the Turf inthis country, has more than doubled within the last ten years, and it isdaily becoming more and more popular. The great practical advan-tages to be derived from its extension and successful prosecution aredeemed so important in a national point of view, that many of theGovernments of Europe are lending it their aid, and keenly watchingover its interests. We have nothing here to do but to go on andprosper, keeping in view this single fact, that if the legitimate ends ofthe Turf are staunchly maintained, it must become at length univer-sally and eminently popular with all classes of society, while its friendswill best subserve its true interests and their own, by frowning downthose individuals whose mal-practices have so long been Running THE thing into THE GrOUND !
Text Appearing After Image:
( 441 ) THE ASS RACE. BY THOMAS HOOD, ESQ. Thou didst run Jack.—Peince Hal. It is not without serious misgivings that I propose to throw on theannals of sporting a new Ught, which will dazzle very offensively inthe eyes of those who have a regard for the Turf. The ghost ofOKelly seems prophetically to cast a shadow across the paper, whilstFancy forestaUs the indignant frowns of the noble Richmonds, Graf-tons, Exeters, and Fitzwilham.s, who have honored the high mettledracer with their patronage. Sam Chifney makes a rush at me, andBoyce prepares to punish me, I consider myself lashed by all thesix different whips with which ***** won the same identical Derby! The very horse hfts his foot for my behoof; and I feel, by anticipa-tion, the cholic that must ensue from a cold plate applied to the pit ofthe stomach. Moral courage, however, will not be denied ; and ac-cordingly, in spite of OKelly, and the Jockey Club of Sam Day andthe Derby Day—of all whips and all spurs to boot—in spite
