n 1907 207,237 miles. If each car carrying the mailsbe taken as a unit^ the annual travel or car mileageaggregated 387,557,165. The Second Assistant Postmaster-General estimatesthat during the fiscal year 1907 the railway postal clerkshandled 11,153,019,150 pieces of first-class mail and9,330,976,200 pieces of all other classes, making a totalof 20,483,985,350 pieces. In addition to this they han-dled 51,321,134 packages and sacks of registered mail.These sums make a total nearly twice the entire numberof pieces of mail transported by the railroads and allother carriers, but this simply means that the same pieceof mail may be handled by more than one railway clerk,that a package of mail may pass over two or more mail-routes on the way to its destination.
