The construction of tramways for cars drawn byhorses was a comparatively simple task, and, from 1801on, tramway companies were frequently chartered inEngland. The tracks were used mainly for hauling min-erals. The Quincy tramway, the first road of its kindin America—built in Massachusetts in 1826 and some-times wrongly called the first railroad in America—wasused to transport the building-stone of which BunkerHill monument was erected. It was only three miles inlength, and extended from the Quincy quarries to a wharfon the Neponset River, l^ear the quarry there was asteep incline, up and down v/hich the cars were handledby a stationary engine; for the remainder of the distancehorses were used.
