Lipping and bony excrescences characterize this group,and the phalanges of the hand, the condyles of the femur,the upper end of the tibia, the os calcis, and very commonlythe patella, top and bottom, are affected. The same condi-tion is found in the hip joint and along the front of thespine at the sides. These thickenings and ridges along thearticular cartilages cause considerable interference with thejoint motions and much resulting pain. A group of cases closely allied with the above, and yetradically different in etiology, is that of infectious arthritis.The onset is abrupt, as distinguished from the atrophic type,but the involvement of the joints occurs rapidly followingthe invasion of the body by some micro-organism.
