us are readily identified upon the skia-gram, the distance between these two landmarks may be meas-ured, not accurately, but approximately, always allowing forslight oblique distortion, and thus the area of the operativefield may be determined. This is of no small consequence, asthe choice of operative procedures may depend upon whetherthere is a forward lying sinus or not. Three types of normalmastoid processes are recognized by Politzer (10)—the pneu-matic or cellular type, the diploetic or spongy type, and themixed types. The pneumatic mastoid is extensive, has numer-ous large and small cells, and the lateral sinus is usuallvplaced some distance back of the external auditory meatus, giving plenty of room for the usual operative procedure. Inthe diploetic or dense types the mastoid process is small, has a ~ *1 s o 3 ^ % I a> en ►+> T^ O C >-t ~ s* £* o 2. crq 1 § £> r+ 3 O o- 3 3 £L g^ ~ n s S. 3 CO M co J: P» 2. 3 H; orq gp. 3 t- 3 3 — orq 3 3 •a 3

In these cases there ismore danger of chiseling into the lateral sinus, and more cau-tion is necessary in operating. Kanasugi (8) examined themastoid process of 4000 skulls and makes the above state-ments. In his Atlas, entitled Pars Mastoidea, he calls atten-tion to several mastoid anomalies which should be recognizedby Roentgen examination. The floor of the middle fossa can be located by the skiagam.and if this floor be very low, it would be of considerable im-portance in operating, to know this in order to guard againstpenetrating the cranial cavity. Some idea of the thickness ofthe tegmen tympani may likewise be gained. The presence ofcells in the base of the zygoma may be shown. Whiting (9),in his text-book, calls attention to the importance of cleaningout these cells. Cells overlying or underlying the lateral sinusare shown on the skiagram. In addition, so
