seen in the lit-tle spurs of the os calcis, which sometimes must be thought tobe of venereal origin. So far as I have been able to see, theslide which Dr. Diefenbach considered pathognomonic ofgonorrhea cannot be considered to be so, any more than it- ispathognomonic of any other infectious disease. As soon as this plastic change takes place between thebones a general condition of plasticity occurs, and the bonesare massed together. The function of the joint is limited asfar as motion is concerned, because it is painful, as well asrestricted. What follows? Atrophy, atrophy of the longbones, which is generally distributed. As atrophy of disuseincreases, the cancellous tissue shows up clearly as beautifullacework. The osseous intrinsic structures here become moreand more marked, and although I have no means of provingit, it seems to me that these changes are often simply thebone tissue seen through a clear window of atrophy. Theminute you get atrophy from disease or disuse, you see the

I was greatly impressed with these excellent slides, and 1most sincerely thank the doctor for presenting them to us. DR. FRED H. BAETJER, BALTIMORE, MARYLAND. I am very fortunately situated in Baltimore, where we havea large negro population, among whom gonorrhea is practi-cally endemic. I have seen many cases and my experiencehas convinced me that it is absolutely a cartilage and jointdisease. It is only after the cartilage has been eroded thatthe end of the bone is attacked. The shaft is never attackedby gonorrhea. As to bony outgrowths, there are two types—the gonorrhealand the non-gonorrheal. When you cut down on them youfind tiny bursae which are infected with the gonococcus, andthat attacks the bone just at the insertion of the plantarfascia. The gonorrheal joint is a long-standing process ex-tending ov
