the crude apparatus could bemanipulated at this undeveloped stage, the services of anexpert or a specialist were hardly considered necessary, asis the case to-day. Not having the time to devote to it him-self, the physician or the surgeon who realized the need ofwhatever X-ray work could then be accomplished, naturallyplaced it in the hands of someone under him. As a result,a large part of the early X-ray work, at least in this country,was, on the one hand, turned over to under assistants oreven individuals with no medical training, such as hospitalpharmacists or nurses; or on the other hand, patients weresent to expert electricians or physicists who were workingwith X-ray apparatus from a purely scientific standpoint, oreven to dealers in X-ray equipment.
