Text Appearing Before Image:
here I sat, and the buzzing of numerousmosquitos. And by the way, if these last mentioned had confined theirattentions to merely buzzing, their presence would have been more wel-come but as it was I can testify that, although they may not equal thefamous Jersey mosquitos in size, their bites were of good quality. Just twice during the three days that I was present, while the nestcontained eggs, did the owner visit the nest, that is to actually standupon the edge. On the first negative that I exposed I was unable tofind a trace of the bird, but on the next was the one shown here. Theday after obtaining this picture, I found that the nest contained young, and the parents were much more anxious than formerly. Not wishingto expose the young to the sun even for a short space of time, I did notattempt to photograph the birds again until the little ones were a weekold and commencing to look like feathered birds instead of the naked, helpless mites that they first were. Text Appearing After Image:
Phjto from life by C. A. RtedALWAYS HUNGRY. 2 2 AMERICAN ORNITHOLOGY. From this time forth the parents remained in the vicinity of the nestwhen I was about. Several incidents occurred to relieve the monotonyof waiting, although probably the birds would have returned to the nestsooner if the interruptions had been omitted. I had just settled downto business, and the Thrush was showing signs of returning for herportrait, when a fusilade of shots came from the edge of the wood.Soon a twenty-five year old boy appeared, armed with a small repeat-ing rifle. He passed by, about twenty yards from me, and showed hissporting proclivities by firing at everything animate that appeared, and, when he could see no living thing to try his skill upon, he would fire atthe surrounding trees, just for excitement. I kept close watch of himto see that he did not notice the camera, for he certainly would havetried to hit it, although his enthusiasm far exceeded his skill, for hemissed everything that he fire
