Punjab is the name given to a largenorthwestern province of British India.It has an area of 133.741 square milesand contains a population of over 20,-000,000 souls. The chief occupation ofthe people is agriculture. Some manu-facturing is done, the Oriental domesticmethods being most commonly em-ployed. Since the Punjab lies at the northwestgateway of India, numerous migrationsand military expeditions from the westhave passed through it, making it thescene of frequent conflicts.
