We will now proceed to show thatWebers theory is not only a possibility, but an actual fact, at leastin the Limulus heart. 2. The Anatomy of the Cardio-regulative Nerves in Limulus. For a more detailed account of the cardiac nervous system ofLimulus, the reader is referred to the papers of Milne-Edwards,^ andPatten and Redenbaugh.^ The intrinsic nervous system of the heartconsists, in short, of a ganglionated cord running the whole length ofthe heart in the dorso-median line, and a system of nerves passingfrom either side of this nerve-cord to the heart-muscle, the severalnerves uniting in one common nerve-trunk at either lateral angle ofthe heart. This intrinsic nervous system is connected with the cen-tral nervous system by an elaborate complex of nerves shown in Fig.I. These nerves have been worked out in great detail by Patten and

Redenbaugh, and the only point touching the anatomy that I have toadd to the excellent figures and descriptions of these authors is thefact that the two posterior pairs of nerves from the dorsal side of thebrain make connections with the nerve-cord en the heart in the man-ner shown in the diagram. Patten and Redenbaugh were not able totrace these nerves to the heart-ganglion.
