ger period are usually not accompanied byany oesophageal contractions (Fig. 2A). But synchronous withthe strong hunger contractions that mark the culmination of agastric hunger period there is some persistent increase in thetonus of the oesophagus and brief contractions simultaneouslywith the individual stomach contractions (Fig. 3). This in-creased tonus and rhythmic contractions of the oesophagus paral-lel with the hunger activity of the empty stomach are in evidenceeven when the oesophagus exhibits the rapid local contractions1 Cannon: This journal, 1906, xvii. p. 586. The Oesophagus during Gastric Hunger 133 described above. The oesophagus contractions appear to lagbehind the gastric contractions and are as a rule of briefer dura-tion. This may mean either that the oesophagus contractions arereflexes via the medulla initiated by the stimulation of vagi nerveendings in the stomach, or the delay in the appearance of thecontractions may be due to a less sensitive recording apparatus,

Pres-sure in the oesophageal balloon = 2 cm. bromoform. Showing complete quiescenceof the oesophagus at the beginning of a period of gastric hunger contractions.B, simultaneous record from the stomach and the lower third of the oesophagusin the dog, showing complete quiescence of the oesophagus during moderate gastrichunger contractions. it being necessary to maintain a sUght pressure in the oesophagealballoon in order to eUminate or minimize the local oesophagealcontractions. The frequent culmination of the gastric hungercontractions in a period of incomplete tetanus of varying dura-tions seems to have no parallel in the oesophagus in the way ofstrong and prolonged contractions. These oesophageal contractions parallel with the gastrichunger contractions are apparently not identical with the oeso-phageal contractions reported by Cann
