Text Appearing Before Image:
experiments, both auricles and ventricles showing this effect previous to the in-jection of sufficient adonis to produce an irregular or toxic actionupon the heart. The increased systolic contraction becomes mostevident here, being especially prominent in the ventricles. There isat times an increased dilatation, especially if the effect of the vagusnerve is not removed by atropine. Section of the vagi frequentlyhas but slight effect, this factor however, being somewhat variable.Apparently adonis tends to a more peripheral stimulation of the vagusnerve than does digitalis; since in the experiments in which sectionof the vagi caused little change in the effects of adonis, there was anoticeable difference if atropine was administered. This consistedin less dilatation of the heart, instead of the increased dilatationusually produced by adonis; and also in a more rapid rate of beatinstead of the slowed rate. This difference was not noticed whenthe same experiments were done with digitalis.
Text Appearing After Image:
Am. Jour. Pharm.October, 1920. Action of Adonis Vernalis. 711 It has been noted that digitahs has two distinct actions upon themammaHan heart. The one is a slowing of its rate, produced byrelatively small doses of digitalis, and removed by section of thevagus nerves or by the administration of atropine. Adonis in a likemanner, in small doses, produces a slowing of the hearts rate, whichin all cases can be removed by atropine. This action may be termedthe beginning of the action of digitalis, or of adonis, and is purelya slowing of rate. Another phase of digitalis action is shown how-ever, in cases of the administration of large doses of digitalis, espe-cially in cases of fatal poisoning. This is evidenced by a more rapidrate of beat, and persists even after section of the vagi, or the in-jection of atropine. Cushny.^^ If the adonis action were to becompared with digitalis, it was considered necessary to compare thisaction also. Large doses of adonis given after removal of vaguscontrol
