n of 0.5 mg. ofdigitoxin per kilo, while adonis required 65 mg. per kilo, or one hun-dred and thirty times as large a dose to produce the same result.Whether the comparative lack of emetic properties possessed byadonis is due to the fact that it is non-irritating to the mucous mem-branes, or that it is unable to produce emesis by acting upon themedulla, the mere fact that it does not have the same amount ofemetic action as digitalis might be a valuable therapeutic factor, forpatients suffering from cardiac decompensation may suffer severelyfrom gastric symptoms, and the administration of the emetic digi-talis becomes most difficult. THE ACTION OF ADONIS IN MAMMAIvS. The blood pressure tracing shows three typical effects as takenfrom rabbits, following the intravenous injection of about one-half cc.of an average strength tincture of adonis. (Tracing 2.) Thereis an immediate rise in pressure, lasting on the average about five orten seconds. After falHng back to normal, there immediately

Am. Jour. Pharm.October, 1920. Action of Adonis Vernalis. 709 follows a more pronounced and more prolonged rise. In addition tothis feature there is a marked slowing of the hearts rate, ahd fre-quently a clearly demonstrable increase in the pulse pressure. Thisincrease occurs only in case there is a slowing of the hearts rate, andis the expected result upon the blood pressure of a strongly beatingheart which is being slowed in rate, thus allowing the pressure to fallfurther between beats. The effect of adonis upon the frogs heart has been previously dis-cussed. Tracings i-A, B, C, and D are typical of those producedby frog hearts whose action has been influenced by adonis. Thehearts are markedly slowed in rate, show a decreased conduction be-tween the auricles and the ventricles, and present an increase in thestrength of the systolic contraction. The reaction of the mammalian heart to adonis was studied inrabbits and dogs by means of the blood pressure tracings, and thoseobtained by t
