th the professor andassistant Ryan were convinced that the instruction in pharmacymust be broadened out and much more attention be given to thecommercial or business training of the embryo pharmacists, andthat it was a proper part of the work of the College to see that thestudent was well-grounded in the essentials of business knowledgeas well as in the professional and theoretical part of his calling sothat the danger of an unsuccessful career would be minimized. Itwas largely through the efforts of Frank G. Ryan that in 1899 theCollege decided to establish an optional course in commercial train-ing and this branch of instruction was placed in his charge. Thiswas an entirely new departure in the curricula of pharmaceuticalschools and attracted considerable attention and comment. Text Appearing After Image:
1 Am. Jour. Pharm.June, 1920. Frank G. Ryan. 373 given in many other schools of pharmacy. To Prof. Frank G. Ryanbelongs the honor of having been the pioneer in this branch of phar-maceutical education and despite the early criticism he lived to seehis ideas and the very course of instruction that he had outlined madethe basis for the accepted course of business training in the leadingschools of pharmacy. At the meeting of the American Pharmaceutical Association heldin Richmond, in 1900, Prof. Ryan was requested to address the mem-bers upon the subject of commercial training for students of collegesof pharmacy. He said that the lack of business knowledge on thepart of the young men engaging in the drug business had been, dis-cussed in the pharmaceutical journals and was undoubtedly real.In his experience he found that but one man in twenty had receivedany training in business principles, although his students weregenerally high school graduates and possessed a rood general edu-cation.
