J inch, andcontain a whitish ligneous meditullium interspersed with ducts, whichare not apparent to the naked eye. The bark, which is the medicinalportion, is in quills, one to four inches in length, -j^ to J inch in diam-eter, and from to -j^ of an inch thick. The outer surface varies incolor from light to dark brown, and is marked with corky protuber-ances and transverse fissures. When the corky layer is removed theouter bark is brought to view, which is of an orange-red color, is lon-gitudinally wrinkled and transversely fissured. The inner surface is 14 210 Rhus Aromatica. ( Am. Jour. Pharm.May, 1881. whitish or flesh-colored^ and striate. The bark is brittle, breaks witha somewhat granular fracture, yields an ochre-colored powder, and hasa distinct, rather pleasant odor, more marked when green than whendry; its taste is astringent, aromatic and slightly bitter when fresh,with a flavor peculiar to the plant from which it is derived. It shouldbe collected in the spring of the year.

Upon microscopical examination the bark appears to be radially andtangentially striate, and is marked throughout with oil tubes and crys-tals, as is shown in the accompanying drawing. Fig. I.
