The papers read at the meeting were as follows: A. B. Stevens,Citro-Compounds of Iron; E. R. Miller and G. H. Marsh, Camphorin Oil of Sassafras; L. E. Sayre, Assay of Gelsemium; F. Klein.Rapid Determination of Sulphuric Acid with the Porous ClayCrucible; E. Kremers, Chemical Problems Suggested by the Cul-tivation of Medicinal Plants, (1) Stramonium. THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHARMACY MA V, ipu THE IDENTIFICATION OF COCAINE AND SOMECOCAINE SUBSTITUTES. By Francis J. Seiter and Frederic Enger. During the last five years, a large number of specimens, con-taining cocaine, has been examined in this laboratory. This workwas done for the Chicago police department, which has been strivingto stamp out the illegal sale of cocaine to habitual users of thealkaloid. The chief difficulty which presented itself in the analysis ofthe specimens was the small amount of material submitted by thepolice officers. The weight of an average specimen was ap-proximately o.i gram. The specimens frequently contained acetan-ilide in amounts varying from 20 per cent, to 80 per cent. Someof the catarrh powders, e.g., Dr. Grays Catarrh Powder, containedbut 8 grains of cocaine hydrochloride to the ounce. As in all thesecases a portion of the specim
