ts hearth is of bricks brought over from Holland asballast in small sailing vessels, more than two centuriesago, before bricks were made in this country. A beautifullydesigned mantel of wood frames the fireplace and upon itsshelf is a pair of old pewter candle-sticks of a kind seldom seen exceptingin the homes of old Dutch families orof collectors of old household treasures.Old portraits and silhouettes hang uponthe walls and old books, some of thembrought from Holland by the originalBrinckerhoffs are upon the bookshelves. The living-room opens into thelibrary or study through a low door-way. A bookcase of uniform height ex-tends on all sides of the room. Onthe walls above the bookcases are manyold prints of notable Dutchmen andEnglishmen, who were prominent in theaffairs of New Amsterdam. Here aremany heirlooms in the way of furni-ture, and an old spinning-wheel whichis a relic of the primitive days when themistress of this old home and her 270 AMERICAN HOMES AND GARDENS August, 1913

The hall as seen from the entrance daughters spun the linen used in the house are still in place.Across the hall from living-room and library is thedining-room, and just beyond is a smaller dining-room withits windows looking out over the lawn. Both rooms arefilled with treasures of old furniture and much antique brassand Delft which has been in place for generations. Morewhite woodwork forms a background for old mahoganyfurniture in tables and chairs and a chest of drawers whichholds a pair of silver candlesticks and a punch bowl. Aboutthe old-fashioned fireplace are arranged old brass warm-ing pans and a copper foot warmer, which are relics of the A bed chamber, once the refuge of Hessians days when beds were warmed in cold weather and whenfoot warmers were regarded as necessary when a journeywas to be made in a sleigh over the hills and vales of BergenCounty.
