A Nearer View of the Portico could gaze upon twelve ofthe richest counties in Vir-ginia. The mansion designed byJefferson and erected underhis personal supervision hasthe plan of a gigantic letterE, the wings opening west-ward. To the north andsouth are walks or prome-nades supported by masonrystructures containing ser-vants quarters and storage-rooms. Masonry-wings ofexactly this same characterwere provided for in theoriginal plans for the WhiteHouse at Washington in theshaping of which Jeffersonhad a hand, and it is thesewings or terraces whichwere restored during therecent reconstruction of thePresidential Mansion. On the edge of the lawnbefore the house at Monti-cello, and at the supremepoint of vantage for thesplendid semi-circular pano-rama, stands the little build-ing used by Jefferson as astudy. Conspic-uous among the landscape-gardening features are theremarkable rectangularflower-beds arranged b yEdmund Bacon, who wasfor twenty years Jeffersonsoverseer. The Monticello mansionhas a Doric order of Romanarchitecture, with heavy cor-nices and massive balus-trades. The interior is inthe Ionic style. The fronthall recedes six feet withinthe wall of the building, anda portico projects abouttwenty-five feet, with stonepillars and steps. Thehouse was thirty-two yearsin building.
