such a comical appear-ance that all who sawhim were convulsed withlaughter, while he slunkguiltily aside. On otheroccasions he wouldsaunter out of the henhouse with an egg con-cealed in his cheek, look-ing as innocent as youplease. These thingshappened in the days ofhis puppyhood when liewas naughty; later onthere was no cause for them deservedly popular. I am now speaking of the rough-coated variety; the smoot-coated, if I am not mistaken, is notbred in this country at all, probably because it lacks somebeauty, although it possesses all the other characteristics ofits race. Having owned three St. Bernards, I believe I amqualified in pronouncing judgment upon these dogs. Forsagacity, fidelity and a sweet temper, they are certainly un-surpassed. They may be safely entrusted with very youngchildren and constitute a dependable guard of honor to everywoman in the household. In my experience, however, a St.Bernard that has been reared at home is preferable to oneraised in a kennel. Prince
