Whenthe garden was first laidout it comprised a plot ofabout thirty feet squarenear the house, and at theright of the picture. Thesecond year it was en-1 a r g e d and laid out asshown in the illustrationswhich have been recentlytaken. The garden waslaid out in a formal man-ner and the beds were formed by strips of cypress boardsset down into the earth with the exposed part being painteddark green, except the beds which are about the summerhouse and fountain which were cut from the sod, leavinggrassed walks.
