Text Appearing Before Image:
th of the trees ismore stunted, and the limbs grow from near theground up, the difficulty of the shooting is second tonone, and in some sections is almost prohibitive. Again, there are sections wherein the quails liveon the open prairie, as in parts of Arkansas, and, theshooting being strictly open, it much resembles chickenshooting, excepting the difference in the size and speedof the two birds, the quail being much the quicker toget away at the start. The quail makes its flight inthe open prairie, alighting near any little bit of shrub-bery, be it no more than a bush or two of sumach, which, by the way, grows here and there on the prairiein Arkansas. In the woods, when pursued, it fre-quently takes to the tree-tops for safety, where it ishidden indeed. On warm days, or when there hasbeen a long spell of pleasant weather, it is far lesswild than when the weather has been stormy, or whenthere has been a sudden change from warm to cold.Such changes add to the difficulty of the shooting.
Text Appearing After Image:
QUAIL SHOOTING 341 In the North, the quail makes its home where somebuckwheat or other grain field is available for a foodsupply. It so arranges its haunts that it has somecover within easy flight, in the densest part of whichit seeks safety when flushed, not refusing the heavilytimbered swamps if too much persecuted by the shooter. In such places it has an excellent chance of escapefrom pursuit, or may foil its pursuer by simply run-ning away; or, if pressed to take flight, it has manychances for safety owing to the difficulty of shootingaccurately in the dense cover. New England shooting is the most difficult of allquail shooting, excepting, perhaps, shooting in thedense pines and cat briers of the South. Then, tohave any satisfactory success, the scattered birds mustbe diligently followed and sought in the thickets, bethey ever so dense. In this respect it differs fromshooting in the sections of more abundance, wheresuch close attention to the scattered birds is unneces-sary, either
