DYNAMOMETER CAR, NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILWAY. The new dynamometer car buill by the Northern PacificRailway combines features which have been employed inother cars previously put into service. It employs the raisedlocation of the operating table which was used in the NewYork Central dynamometer car which was illustrated in theJune number of this journal, page 198. The operators plat-form in the Northern Pacific car is 10 ft. 6 ins. x 7 ft., with apassageway on one side of the car. The platform is raisedabout 4 ft. above the floor of the car and the cupola gives theobservers a clear view in both directions, provided the cupolais not enveloped in smoke from the locomotive. For transmitting and measuring the drawbar pulling and buf-fing stresses, hydraulic apparatus is used, this being similar tothe equipment of the dynamometer cars of the Burlington andof the University of Illinois.
