the water evaporated. As closeobservation showed that comparatively high water was ararity, it is evident that comparatively little was entrained, andthat the results obtained were very close to the water .actuallyevaporated. It was also of great interest to obtain the most accurate datapossible regarding the temperature of the products of combus-tion as they entered the smoke-box. It was found, by tryinga great many different methods of measurement, that a quick-silver thermometer with its bulb in the center of the smoke-box gave the best results. Then by having a means of adjust-ing, the temperature at the upper as well as the lower row oftubes could be obtained. After the deflector-plate had beenadjusted only a slight variation was to be ol)served, so thatthe temperature <as measured at the center of the tube-sheetmay be taken as an average of the whole. In order to insure the perfect combustion of the fuel andthe complete convection of the heat produced, a large numberof analyses of the gases as they entered the smoke-box weremade. These analyses were made by means of the Orsat ap-paratu.s. and by taking llic averages of a large number of ex-aminations the amount of carbonic oxide and carbon dioxidewas obtained. Samples were taken when the fire was burn-ing normally with the fire-door closed. In order to obtain the amount of convection to the fireboxcasing, the temperature of this latter was ol>taiueil by a largenumber of observations made on the side walls as well as atthe front and back. The thermometer was put in throughthe jacketing until the bulb was in contact with the plate. Inlike manner the temperature of the outer shell of tlie fireboxof the
