P1TTSBUBUII & LAKE ERIE RAILBOAD. The Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroadhas recently built at its McKees Hocksshops two 150,000-lb. capacity flat cars, which were especially designed forcarrying heavy and large irregular-shaped castings. The makers andusers of large castings in the Pitts-burgh district were asked to furnishdimensions and weights of their larg-est castings, and an examinationshowed that the car might have tocarry the greater part of the load dis-tributed over a comparatively smallspace near its center, and that be-cause of the size of some of the cast-ings and the clearances to be observedthe distance from the top of the railto the top of the floor would have tobe about 42 ins. While the car is nom-inally of 150,000 lbs. capacity, it isdesigned to carry this weight distrib-uted over a distance of four feet at itscenter, and will, of course, carry safelya much greater load if distributed overa greater area.
