Numerousschemes and devices have been suggested, to improve theaction of a planer as to its driving mechanism, but as yet noarrangement has been sufficiently successful to replace theordinary countershaft, with shifting belts, with a properlyarranged balance wheel effect. Because of a rather large number of cracked cylinders Inlarge locomotives recently built, a great hue and cry is raisedon several railroads against large engines. Of course cylindersshould be designed and made so that they will not break, butthe very large number of old and small engines with theircylinders banded seem to have been forgotten.
