se lights have begun to dis-appear, indicating—or so, at all events, I chose to believe—that certain old ladies wearing caps and black silkgowns with old lace fichus held in place by ancientcameos, have proceeded slowly, rustlingly, upstairs tobed, accompanied by their cats. At Cathedral Street, a block or two from Charles,Biddle Street performs a jog, dashing off at a tangentfrom its former course, while Chase Street not only jogsand turns at the corresponding intersection, but doesso again, where, at the next corner, it meets at once withPark Avenue and Berkeley Street. After this it runsbut a short way and dies, as though exhausted by itsown contortions. Here, in a region of malformed city blocks—some ofthem pentagonal, some irregularly quadrangular, somewedge-shaped—Howard Street sets forth upon its way,running first southwest as far as Richmond Street, thenturning south and becoming, by degrees, an importantthoroughfare. Can most travellers, I wonder, enjoy as I do a solitary walk, by night, throughthe mysterious streets of a strange city? A BALTIMORE EVENING attention was arrested by shadowy forms in a darkwindow: furniture, andirons, chinaware, and weaponsof obsolete design: unmistakable signs of a shop inwhich antiquities were for sale. After making mentalnote of the location of this shop, I proceeded on myway, keeping a sharp lookout for other like establish-ments. Nor was I to be disappointed. These birds ofa feather bear out the truth of the proverb by flockingtogether in Howard Street, as window displays, faintlyvisible, informed me. Since we have come naturally to the subject of an-tiques, let us pause here, under a convenient lamp-post,and discuss the matter further.
