Summary
[edit]DescriptionFormer American Scandinavian Methodist Episcopal Church, Buffalo, New York - 20200415.jpg |
English: The former American Scandinavian Methodist Episcopal Church, 189 Masten Avenue at Northampton Street, Buffalo, New York, April 2020. Founded in 1909 by the Rev. Andrew Hanson, who'd made a name for himself as a preacher amongst Buffalo's small, tight-knit Scandinavian-American community, they first worshipped in a small frame building on Grey Street near Humboldt Park, then in the former Northampton German Methodist Church from 1921 until that building's destruction by fire ten years later (precipitated by a floating ember from the nearby Masten Avenue Armory, which burned at the same time), and finally to this handsome brick church, whose simplified Gothic Revival design is the work of the prolific local firm of Bley & Lyman. The congregation changed its name to St. Andrew's Methodist in 1954, then, after a period of expansion despite changing neighborhood demographics (the result of welcoming congregants from nearby Methodist churches after their dissolution), moved to Best Street and took on the name Metropolitan Methodist Church. Later occupants of the building included Victory Rock Seventh Day Adventist Church (1982-c. mid-2010s) and the Apostolic Rock Temple of the Living Elohiym [sic] (through 2016). |
