Description A kayaker emerges from the American River near Watt Avenue in Sacramento, Calif., Jan. 4, 2012, where surveyors for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District recorded locations of structures and trees along 50 miles of Sacramento levees. The survey is part of a study to plan future levee improvements. Researchers identified as many as 16,000 levee penetrations, encroachments (like pools and power lines) and trees during the four-month survey. (U.S. Army photo by Todd Plain/Released)
