Ya know, all the range maps only show American Pipits around here during migration, and since I only ever seemed to see them in Late Feb-March, I figured they're just early migrators. Also, I can only find pipits when it snows (they're even more corn-colored than the horned larks), and most of our major snows come in that same time period. Well imagine my surprise when we got dumped on by nor'easters twice already this year, and lo and behold, the pipits were everywhere. Good to know they're actually here all winter. Much easier to spot when when there's only one spot of field that isn't snow covered. This one was squabbling with the larks and digging up old corn kernels. |
