Pikas are sometimes seen in the rocky tundra slopes of Great Sand Dunes National Preserve, where they gather mounds of summer grasses to dry in the sun. During long winters under the snowpack, they survive on these cached food supplies. Hikers may hear a pika's distinctive 'squeak toy' call before they see it. NPS/Patrick Myers |
