Description

NPS/Patrick Myers

  1. WildlifeWednesday - Though drab in color to camouflage in mountain streams, the American Dipper is one of the most charismatic birds at Great Sand Dunes. Dippers rapidly bob up and down, dancing along stream banks, watching for aquatic insects in the clear water. When they see prey, they close their nostril flaps, dive into the frigid water, and swim with their wings to capture it. They can also walk underwater along creek bottoms, overturning rocks to find prey.

Look for American Dippers along forested areas of Mosca, Medano, or Sand Creek. The #YearOfTheBird continues throughout 2018!
