he Republican party with aiming to denyto the people equality before the law, to fetter enterprise, dis-courage capital and limit traffic to home markets, by unequal andunjust laws; pledged the party to continue its hostility to exces-sive tax laws which increased the price of necessaries of life ;declared against trusts in every form ; charged the Republi-cans with a desire to accumulate the surplus in the Treasury, andproclaimed the necessity for a free revision of all laws by whichsaid surplus was maintained. The Republicans met in National Convention at Chicago, June19, 1888. There were many aspirants for nomination in the field,among whom were John Sherman, Ohio; Chauncey M. Depew,N. Y.; William W. Phelps, N. J.; Walter Q. Gresham, Ills.;Benjamin Harrison, Ind.; William E. Allison, Iowa; Russel A.Alger, Mich.; and Edwin H. Fitler, Pa. The admirers of JamesG. Blaine, Me., were very strong in the Convention, and his namewas kept prominent!/ before it, throughout the entire session.

His own request (June 25) that balloting for him cease, left theConvention free to concentrate on some one else, and on the sixthday of the session, and eighth ballot, Benjamin Harrison, Ind.,received the nomination for President. Levi P. Morton, N. Y.,was nominated for Vice-President. The platform honored thememory of Lincoln, Grant, Garfield, Arthur, Logan, and Conk-ling; greeted Sheridan with prayer for his recovery; congratu-lated Brazil on emancipation of her slaves ; expressed a hope forearly Home Rule in Ireland; affirmed devotion to an indis-soluble Union of States, to personal right and liberty of citizensin all the States; held a free ballot and equal representation tobe the foundation of republican government; demanded effectivelegislation to secure the integrity and purity of elections ; chargedthat the Democracy owed its ascendency to suppression of theballot and criminal nullification of the Constitution and laws ofthe United States; p
