Cassola is so strict a disciplinarian that while Minister of War he actuallyplaced old Captain-General Martinez Campos under arrest, besides severelyreprimanding him for having refused, in his capacity as Captain-General ofMadrid, to take the countersign from the Princess Eulalie in the absence ofthe Queen from the capital. Martinez Campos took the ground that inasmuchas Don Antonio, the husband of Princess Eulalie, was a mere captain ofcavalry, forming part of the Madrid garrison, it was ridiculous to expect himto make his daily report and to take the countersign from the wife of one ofhis subaltern officers. Martinez Campos, indeed, made such a fuss about thematter when the Queen returned that Cassola had to resign, greatly to thesorrow and dismay of the army, over 10,000 officers of which thereuponjoined in a subscription to present him with a magnificent sword of honor asa testimonial of their esteem and regard.
