The Spanish fleet, which the Governor-General had been overpersuaded by Admiral Montijo to order to sea to meet DEWEYS BREAKFAST. 211 and destroy the coward Yankee pigs, was recalled Saturday afternoon andlined tip seven miles down the bay from Manila, at Cavite, where the arsenal,dry-docks and naval workshops were defended by a long line of earthworks.Those works had been greatly strengthened of late, notably by the additionof several big modern guns. They were regarded as very formidable by theold-fashioned Spanish military engineers. The fort on Corregidor Island,the battery on Caballo Island, and the works on the mainland points to thenorth and south of those islands were all in readiness, and the chain ofmines which guarded both channels were prepared to blow up each Americanship as it passed.
