A shell hadburst just outside of the house wherethe nine were making merry and the vio- 76 AMERICAN AMBULANCE lence of the impact had hurled all ofthem to the ground. Two feet nearerand the whole lot would have been killed.Schroeder and I decided we had better goback to bed, and we insisted that Ogilvie(who lived in the house so nearly de-stroyed) should come with us. We madehim a sort of a bed on the floor and turnedin. We stayed awake, expecting a call, but none came till five oclock, when wewere told that the medecin division-naire had ordered us to leave Pont-a-Mousson immediately. We dressed andpacked and got around to the caserne tofind that nearly every one had already leftand that all thought Ogil vie dead. Why?we asked. His house had been completelydestroyed, — even a 280 shell had burstin the cellar itself. Two shells had burst inour caserne and all around was wreckageand mess. I got some coffee at a littlecafe, and being on Montauville duty wentup there, a sad and depressed being. That afternoon, about one oclock, ashell burst right in the middle of the street at X — killing one soldier and badly \ minding four more. I wasnot far away. I took them to the hospitalat Dieulouard, where I found the rest of 78 AMERICAN AMBULANCE the Section getting themselves installedin their new quarters
