Description

En 1848, à la suite d'un traité de reddition non respecté par les autorités françaises, l'émir Abd El-Kader et une centaine de compagnons furent placés en captivité dans le château. La parole de la France n'est pas tenue par les régimes et les gouvernements successifs. L'émir est retenu en captivité pendant cinq années. Au retour d'une tournée en France 16 octobre 1852, le futur Napoléon III vient annoncer solennellement sa liberté à l'émir. Après avoir fait serment, de ne plus perturber les opérations françaises en Algérie (décembre 1852), Abd El Kader part pour Brousse puis Damas où il enseigne la théologie à la mosquée des Omeyyades.


In 1848, following a treaty of surrender not respected by the French authorities, the Emir Abd El-Kader and a hundred companions were placed in captivity in the castle. The word of France is not bound by the successive regimes and governments. The emir has held captive for five years. Returning from a tour in France October 16, 1852, the future Napoleon III has just announced solemnly freedom to the emir.

After the oath, not to disrupt the French operations in Algeria (December 1852), Abd El Kader leaves for Brousse then left for Damascus where he teaches theology at the Umayyad Mosque.
