Italiano: "Catalogato negli inventari Barbi Cinti, n. 470, e Vendeghini, n. 114.
L'iscrizione recente posta sulla cornice afferma che la figura ritratta sarebbe quella di Lucrezia de' Medici, moglie di Alfonso II d'Este. L'inventario Barbi Cinti al n. 470 suggerisce più plausibilmente il nome della seconda moglie di Alfonso, Barbara d'Austria. L'attribuzione a Lavinia Fontana, avanzata in precedenza per l'analogia di questo ritratto femminile con altri della pittrice, come le due donne nel Ritratto di gruppo della Famiglia Gozzadini, e il Ritratto di gentildonna con bambina, ambedue alla Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna, sembra più riferibile alla somiglianza delle vesti e alla presenza del cagnolino, che non per la corrispondenza stilistica della pennellata e degli accordi cromatici.
