Summary

[edit]
Description

21 April 2011. A service alley at the rear of some shops, used for access and storing - and sometimes for dumping waste.

Naming a back alley a Mews is one way to try making it seem a bit posh.

Wikipedia explains that in London the word mews originally meant a building where Royal birds were kept caged (cooped) for falconry. Later it was applied to stables. Later these often became garages. Nowadays, in the rich neighbourhoods of London they are often fashionable small houses or flats.

But not yet in Wood Green

§ Mew : Oxford English Dictionary: Etymology: Anglo-Norman muer = moult. § A local resident posting on Flickr told me about severe dumping and litter problems in Dovecote Avenue, a long service alley on the opposite (eastern) side of High Road, Wood Green, N22. View his photos including an aerial photo here. § Several years ago when Carol Kennedy was Wood Green High Road manager, she said these back alleys were a constant headache. It doesn't seem to have changed much.

§ Further north the alley at the rear of the shops is Hazel Mews.
