Fronteiras do Pensamento 2012 | São Paulo, 23/04; Porto Alegre, 25/04 Economista indiano, Prêmio Nobel de Economia em 1998 por sua contribuição às teorias da escolha social e do bem-estar social. Professor na Universidade de Harvard (Estados Unidos), Sen foi um dos idealizadores do Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano – IDH e fundador do Instituto Mundial de Pesquisa em Economia do Desenvolvimento (Universidade da ONU). Em 2011, recebeu do presidente norte-americano Barack Obama a Medalha Nacional de Humanidades por ser “único em suas ideias sobre as causas da pobreza, da fome e da injustiça”.

Amartya Sen é reconhecido internacionalmente por dedicar grande parte de sua vida ao combate à pobreza com análises, estratégias complexas e soluções concretas, com obras traduzidas para mais de 30 idiomas. Seus conceitos tiveram grande impacto no entendimento de ‘riqueza’ e ‘justiça’. Para Sen, o desenvolvimento de um país é medido pelo bem-estar social de seus cidadãos e a justiça é construída de acordo com as reações da população frente às injustiças vividas cotidianamente.
