Description

Heading up and into Amalfi Cathedral.

You have to pay to go in.


Originally built in the 9th century. Repeatedly remodelled. Enlarged in the 10th century, rebuilt in Arabic-Norman forms in the 13th century, remodelled in the 16th and 17th centuries. Renovated between 1701 and 1731. Facade damaged in 1861.

The bell tower is separate from the facade of the cathedral, and is not in line with the facade. First begun in 1180 and finished a century later. Arabic style. The majority is covered in yellow and green is unusual.

A long flight of 62 steps must be climbed to get to the Cathedral but the evocative Gothic atrium, the reflection of light on the lively facade with its ornamental motives of Byzantine, Arab. Norman derivation made it well worth the effort.
