Description
English: The first cyclone of 2024, named Alvaro, made landfall near Morombe in Madagascar on 1 January, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. According to the latest forecasts from Meteo France, the storm is unlikely to pose a threat to other regions and is expected to gradually weaken. This image, acquired by one of Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites on 1 January 2024, shows the cyclone when it was in the Mozambique Channel. Thanks to the Copernicus Sentinel satellites and their open data, scientists and meteorologists have access to a vast amount of data which can be used to mitigate and/or monitor the impact of extreme weather events, which are becoming more intense and frequent as a consequence of climate change.
