Summary
Probably the castle was built around 1110 by brothers Adolf and Eberhard von Berg above the Lenne on the Wulfseck. The first name was Wulfhagen. Later it was renamed in Altena. Since 1392 the then Earl von der Mark so the new name, moved from the harsch Sauerland to the castle Mark near Hamm. According to legend, the name Altena is coming from an old German expression, "all te na" which means, much too close. Count of Arnsberg was the new castle just "much too close". |
