Summary
[edit]DescriptionAltazamuth Stone on Peter Street in Knightstown - geograph.org.uk - 426470.jpg |
English: Altazamuth Stone on Peter Street in Knightstown This stone marks the location of the altazimuth instrument that precisely determined the longitude of Knightstown in the Summer of 1862. The measurement was part of a campaign to accurately determine the longitude of multiple locations along the 52nd parallel from Valentia to Omsk, Siberia. Telegraph equipment was connected to the nearby telegraph office to synchronize the timing of astronomical observations at this location with simultaneous observations by the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. |
