Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Margaret "Maggie" Maynard Butler was born December 8, 1860 in Crawfordsville, Indiana and died January 7, 1928 in Washington, D.C. at the age of 67 and was subsequently buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana. She was the daughter of John Maynard Butler (September 17, 1834-1895), regarded by many as Indiana's leading lawyer, and Susan Williams Jennison. Margaret married Alpheus Henry Snow June 29, 1887 in Indianapolis, and following his death established the Alpheus Henry Snow Prize at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut on December 22, 1922.

The Alpheus Henry Snow Award ranks among the most important prizes for high scholarship and character that are awarded annually as a traditional part of Class Day ceremonies. Honoring Mr. Snow, B.A. 1879, the prize recognizes “the senior who, through the combination of intellectual achievement, fine character and personality, shall be adjudged by the faculty to have done the most for Yale by inspiring in his or her classmates an admiration and love for the best traditions of that high scholarship to the service of which our universities are dedicated". Winners of the Snow Award have gone on to distinguished careers in a variety of fields. See Alpheus Henry Snow in Wikipedia.

She also established the John Maurice Butler (1865-1896) Award at Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana in remembrance of her beloved brother. The Butler Prize for Scholarship and Character, honoring John Maurice Butler, Wabash Class of 1887, is the highest academic award attainable at Wabash College and is reserved for a member of the senior graduating class. The Award was announced in September 1922 and is given annually to the graduating Wabash senior thought to have the finest character and greatest ability. It is considered one of the college’s top honors for an undergraduate.

Any further particulars concerning her additional legacies see: Last Will and Testament of Margaret Butler Snow under Washington, D.C., U.S., Wills and Probate Records in Ancestry.

Margaret "Maggie" Snow authored "Letters From Europe" and "Letters From May To October 1884" under her maiden name which were a compilation of her family's travels.
