[edit]DescriptionAlpenglow on Dunes and Sangre de Cristo Mountains (33885689791).jpg |
NPS/Patrick Myers Early explorers named these mountains "Sangre de Cristo" ("Blood of Christ") for the reddish glow that often occurs at sunrise or sunset. As the sun nears the horizon of this valley that is the size of Connecticut, its light shines through soft atmospheric haze, shifting the color toward red. |
