NPS/Patrick Myers The San Luis Valley and Great Sand Dunes have long been a place of inspiration for diverse cultural groups. Paleo people celebrated the valley’s abundant mammoths, bison, and rich plant life. Some Puebloan tribes commemorate springs and wetlands near the dunes as their place of emergence as a people. Utes and other tribes peeled pine trees around the dunes for food and medicine, and over 200 of these culturally modified pines still stand as living artifacts in the park today. African American Buffalo Soldiers patrolled near the dunes in the 1870s, amazed at this dramatic landscape that was starkly different from those in their home states. And early settlers gave these mountains the name ‘Sangre de Cristo’ (‘Blood of Christ’) for the intense crimson color that can occur as the sun sets through atmospheric haze across this vast valley. Today, people from all over the world are also inspired as they lift up their eyes to these mountains and dunes. Take time to find your own quiet place of inspiration during your next visit to Great Sand Dunes!
