Description Marine Sergeant Clarence H. Raper (right) and Corporal Walter L. Gibson pose beside the first amphibian tractor procured by the Marine Corps. It was tested extensively in 1940 under the direction of then Captain Victor H. Krulak, the later author of First to Fight: An Inside View of the U.S. Marine Corps and the father of Charles C. Krulak, the 31st Commandant of the Marine Corps.
