Description
English: Miles better ! Haringey Council-owned alleyway behind 521 Seven Sisters Road N15. Compare.

A wide range of projects aim at turning underused sites into gardens and playgrounds. The most famous is probably the New York Restoration Project - founded by Bette Midler - which includes creating Community Gardens from dumped and abandoned back lots. (Click on their New York Restoration Project homepage and then on the box "Community Gardens".

The challenge is going beyond the initial makeover. What makes such a public garden successful and sustainable? It helps if the initial design sparkles and captures people's imagination. And probably if the plants aren't too easy to dig up and take away.

Ongoing oversight and maintenance is vital.

But probably, the best chance of success comes when local residents are involved and feel they own the project. In other words, when creation and upkeep of a garden is by or with local people, rather than for or to them by outsiders.
