Description

Allenypterus montanus Melton, 1969 fossil fish from the Mississippian of Montana, USA (public display, Museum of the Rockies, Bozeman, Montana, USA)

This Allenypterus montanus fossil coelacanth fish is from estuarine deposits of the Late Mississippian-aged Bear Gulch Lagerstätte at Potter Creek Dome, Montana. Coelacanths are one of three groups of lobe-finned fish (sarcopterygian bony fish). They are known as fossils in the Paleozoic and Mesozoic, but not in the Cenozoic. Despite that, coelacanths are still alive in modern oceans.

From museum signage: "With its small tail and hump-backed body, this species was shaped differently from other coelacanths. It lived in the seaweed and sponge thickets, feeding on small prey."

Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Sarcopterygii, Actinistia, Coelacanthiformes, Hadronectoridae

Stratigraphy: Bear Gulch Limestone Member, Heath Formation, Upper Mississippian

Locality: Fergus County, central Montana, USA
